Peltola, Kuhn and Kaptur Recover After Separate Car Crashes

Mary Peltola, Heidi Kuhn and Marcy Kaptur were injured in separate vehicle crashes during the campaign. Two happened in October, while Kaptur’s August crash makes a circulating graphic’s timeline misleading.

Three Democratic candidates for Congress have been injured in separate car crashes during the 2026 campaign, but the incidents did not all happen in the past few days. Mary Peltola and Heidi Kuhn were hurt in October, while Rep. Marcy Kaptur’s crash occurred on August 2.

The distinction corrects a circulating graphic that places all three crashes within a few days. Police statements, campaign announcements and local reporting establish separate incidents in Alaska, Tennessee and Ohio, with different recovery timelines.

Peltola’s campaign postponed two events on medical advice, Kuhn publicly described facial injuries, and Kaptur has returned to congressional work after treatment and rehabilitation. The reviewed reports do not establish a connection among the crashes.

Democratic Candidates Were Injured on Different Dates

Kuhn’s collision happened in Memphis on Friday, October 23. Peltola’s vehicle was struck in Anchorage the following evening, October 24. Kaptur was injured nearly three months earlier while traveling to church in Toledo.

All three were occupants of vehicles involved in collisions. Describing them simply as being “hit by cars” can obscure that detail, while describing all three crashes as recent leaves out the August date.

Peltola Postponed Events After Anchorage Collision

The Anchorage Police Department’s collision bulletin places the crash near O’Malley Road and Lake Otis Parkway at approximately 6:55 p.m. on October 24.

Police said a westbound vehicle rear-ended a second vehicle stopped at the light, pushing it into a third. Peltola was in the second vehicle. Its occupants and the first vehicle’s driver were taken to a hospital with injuries police described as not life-threatening.

Her campaign said Peltola and her family were traveling to the Alaska Federation of Natives Annual Banquet. Campaign manager Cheryl Bruce described their injuries as minor and said they were in good spirits.

An October 25 campaign statement said appearances in Fairbanks and Bethel would be rescheduled so Peltola could recover. It said other stops on her Alaska Always Tour would continue as scheduled.

On October 26, Anchorage police spokesperson Gina Romero told Alaska Beacon there were no indications of a targeted attack. Peltola, a former U.S. representative, is challenging Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan.

Kuhn Described Injuries After Memphis Crash

Heidi Kuhn and her husband, Matt, were involved in a three-vehicle crash on eastbound Interstate 240 near Walnut Grove Road on October 23, according to local television reporting and her campaign.

A WMC report carried by WBBJ said the collision happened shortly before 7:30 p.m. and blocked several lanes. Her campaign said the couple received care at Baptist Hospital and were recovering.

In a subsequent social-media update reported by WREG and carried by AOL, Kuhn said she had a broken nose, a broken upper jaw and whiplash. She said her husband also had whiplash and expressed gratitude that their injuries were not worse.

The report said both were released from the hospital on October 24. Kuhn is the Democratic nominee challenging Republican Rep. David Kustoff in Tennessee’s 8th Congressional District.

The reviewed campaign statement did not provide a revised campaign schedule. It should not be described as confirmation that she immediately resumed every planned appearance.

Kaptur’s Crash Happened in August

Kaptur, 80, was a passenger traveling to a church service on August 2 when another vehicle struck the vehicle carrying her and campaign manager Kegan Zimmermann in Toledo. Both received medical care.

Local reporting described hospital treatment followed by physical rehabilitation. WTVG reported that she returned to Washington and the campaign trail six weeks after the crash. She is seeking reelection against Republican Derek Merrin.

A suspect was arrested in October and subsequently indicted, according to local reporting. Investigators alleged the other driver was speeding in heavy rain, lost control after hitting a puddle and crossed the center line. The charges are allegations, not a conviction.

In an August police update carried by FOX19, Toledo’s police chief said there was no indication the crash was intentional. That finding and Anchorage police’s later statement do not establish the cause of Kuhn’s crash.

The Democratic candidates’ recovery and campaign updates remain separate from the crash investigations. Their races continue toward the November 3 general election.
